August First Inc. is a locally owned and operated hearth baked bread and coffee and lunch shop located in downtown Burlington. They opened their doors in August with the help of a small business loan from Opportunities Credit Union. Unlike most start-ups, where lenders shy away from financing a start-up retail business in the midst of an economic downturn, Phil and Jodi actually had a choice of lenders. They were attracted to Opportunities because of the competitive terms coupled with the community-based mission of the Credit Union which mirrors their own business philosophy.
This loan not only created jobs in Burlington, but August First's commitment to the community also means a positive "trickle-down" effect for local vendors and produce suppliers.
